Last week, the standards in Social Studies focused on the difference between goods and services. As our culminating lesson the 3 kindergarten classes, on our hallway, had 2 guest speakers. Ruby Moore came and talked about the services provided at Thomas County Federal and Marty Lutes talked about the goods he makes at Allgood Printing.
Another standard that went along with these lessons was that people work to earn an income. The students all gave me their future careers and how much they would make. This week, to tie that standard into the standard about President’s Day, I asked them to tell me how much the President made. Our range was all over the board from $12,000 to $150,000 and even an answer of $1 billion. Then we looked up the real salary which is $400,000/yr. I then told the students they may want to change their minds from the jobs they wanted last week to becoming the future president!

Our Class Post Office
This month we also learned about pen pals and reviewed how to write a letter. We wrote letters to our pen pals in Ms. Melissa Blanton’s kindergarten class and out 1st grade buddy class at Garrison Pilcher, in Ms. Donna Corbin’s class. Since we were talking about letters, and the mail, I turned our house area into a post office. The students really enjoyed delivering mail and packages.

Even though February is the shortest month of the year it seems to be packed full of exciting things to do and learn. February is dental health month, and the students really enjoyed playing dentist with the large set of teeth in the science center. We also had some future fashion designers trying out their skills at designing purses. We even had a dance party where we danced to Willow Smith, Mylie Cyress, and Justin Bieber. The students had a great time, and as you can see Ms. Heather and I did too!

February Enrichment Friday
Friday, February 11th was another enrichment Friday where the students rotated through the school doing different activities on each hall. This month's focus was dental and heart health. The students learned how much sugar is in some common drinks and foods, made homemade tooth paste, practiced brushing their teeth, took their resting and active heart rate, listened to their friend's heart beat and learned how the heart pumps blood through the body.

Nursing Home Visit
Thursday we loaded the school bus and went to sing songs and deliver Valentine cards, along with Ms. Many and Ms. Leslea's classes. The children did a wonderful job and the residents truly enjoyed our performance. We had two extra special people in the audience, Maggie's great grandmother and Triston's great grandmother.

February Fathers
Last Friday was February Father's day. We had an excellent turn out of fathers, and 3 grandfathers. The students were so excited and really enjoyed listening to all the stories. What a special day!
Shadows
February 2nd was Ground Hog's day. We used this day to review the words "tradition" and "predictions." We reviewed the months of the year and learned that they are shared equally between the 4 seasons, so we knew no matter if the ground hog saw his shadow or not spring would not really come earlier. We did take this opportunity to experiment with light and shadows. The students enjoyed making their own shadows at center time.
